A classic two-tone glazed stoneware bottle featuring a rich treacle-brown glazed top and shoulder over a cream-colored body. The front bears a bold black transfer-printed label reading:
“Wheatley & Bates Ltd.
Wheatley’s ‘Old Style’
Brewed Ginger Beer
Sheffield.”
Along the sides of the label are period warnings typical of the time, including the statement that use for any other purpose is illegal—an indication that the bottle originally formed part of a returnable deposit system used by beverage manufacturers.
The bottle has a pleasing rounded shoulder and short neck, currently fitted with a later 1920s black screw cap. Originally these bottles were commonly sealed with internal stoppers or crown closures depending on the exact production period.
