Three ghosts sat around a wobbly little table, frowning with great concentration.
“Everyone ready?” whispered Edith.
“We’ve been ready since 1842,” sighed Bernard, who took these things far too seriously.
Clara, meanwhile, poked the planchette. “Are we sure this works the other way round?”
“Hush,” said Edith. “We must be respectful. We are attempting to contact… the Living.”
They all leaned in.
“Is… anyone there?” Edith breathed.
The planchette trembled, then moved
Slowly, it spelled: HELLO
The three ghosts gasped in unison.
“It worked!” Clara beamed. “We’ve reached them!”
Bernard cleared his throat importantly. “Ask something profound.”
Edith nodded, thinking hard. “What… is it like? Being alive?”
The planchette slid again, a little faster this time: TIRING
The ghosts paused.
“Oh,” said Clara. “That’s a bit disappointing.”
“Ask another,” Bernard insisted.
Edith leaned closer. “Do you… think of us often?”
The planchette didn’t move for a moment.
Then, gently: SOMETIMES
The ghosts exchanged looks.
“Well,” Bernard muttered, “rude.”
Clara giggled. “I like them. They seem busy.”
Edith smiled softly and gave the planchette a tiny, affectionate nudge.
“Goodbye,” she whispered.
The lights flickered, and the connection faded.
They sat back in silence for a moment.
Then Clara perked up. “Same time tomorrow?”
Bernard sighed. “Only if they bring better answers.”
